Music Theory

Understanding music theory is like learning the language of music. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced musician, a solid grasp of music theory can elevate your playing, boost your creativity, and deepen your appreciation for the music you love. Our Music Theory Classes for Kids and Adults are designed to make learning this essential aspect of music fun, engaging, and accessible to all ages and skill levels.

Why Learn Music Theory?

Music theory provides the foundation for understanding how music works. It helps you:

  • Read and write music: Understand musical notation and how to interpret sheet music.

  • Improve your performance: Better understand scales, chords, and rhythms, allowing you to play more confidently.

  • Enhance creativity: Learn how melodies, harmonies, and rhythms come together to form the music you love.

  • Communicate with other musicians: Music theory is the universal language of music that allows musicians to collaborate more effectively.

Whether you're a singer, instrumentalist, or composer, knowledge of music theory is crucial in building a well-rounded musical skill set.

Rockschool (RSL) London Music Theory Syllabus

Our classes are based on the Rockschool (RSL) London Music Theory syllabus, an internationally recognised programme that blends contemporary music with classical concepts. This modern approach to theory keeps things fresh, relevant, and directly connected to the styles of music students enjoy—pop, rock, jazz, and more.

Students will work through graded levels of the Rockschool theory curriculum, gradually building their knowledge of:

  • Notation and rhythm

  • Scales and key signatures

  • Chords, harmony, and progressions

  • Musical form and analysis

  • Aural skills and listening comprehension

As part of the programme, students have the opportunity to sit official graded theory exams in June and November each year. These exams provide clear goals, recognised achievement, and a great sense of progress and accomplishment.

For Kids and Teens

Music theory is often a requirement for young musicians, but it doesn’t have to be boring or intimidating. Our classes for kids and teens focus on making theory fun and relevant. We use games, activities, and creative exercises to help younger students understand and apply theory to their instrument and musical interests. Students gain the tools they need to support their performance, school music exams, or Rockschool practical grades.

For Adults

Whether you’re a returning musician or just starting out, theory will enrich your musical experience. Adult classes offer a relaxed and supportive space to explore theory at your own pace. You’ll learn how to read music, understand structure, and connect theory to the music you love playing or listening to. Working toward Rockschool grades is completely optional but encouraged for those wanting a clear pathway and goal.

A Supportive, Modern Learning Environment

With engaging materials, practical applications, and a contemporary syllabus, our Music Theory classes help students of all ages build confidence and fluency in the language of music. Whether you're aiming for exams or learning for the joy of it, you’ll leave each class more knowledgeable and musically empowered.
