Enjoy The Process
Although this blog is targeted at drummers, it can apply to all instruments.
As musicians, we want to achieve our goals quickly. However, to really understand what we are playing and to play it well, it is important to take our time and trust the process, so why not enjoy the process!
Embracing the steps and challenges to reach the final goal will make learning so much more fun and rewarding. Whether it's learning a new Drum Beat, Fill or Song, taking your time to lock in what you are playing is so important.
No matter what level you are at if you are learning something new, it is important to start slow. I often say to students that drumming is like the 'steps' of life
First you crawl, then you walk, then you run, then you sprint. If we try to skip any of these steps then we are left falling over. We need to build strength and control to reach the next step.
Celebrate the wins along the way. This could be celebrating the first time you play a new exercise 4 times, or for 1 minute without stopping. Whatever level you are at, celebrate the milestones, no matter how big or small they might be.
We all want to get to the end result as quickly as possible, but getting there the right way and enjoying the process makes it so much more rewarding.
